A Brief History:
“A History of King Stadium”
In 1958 as the Okanagan Lake Bridge was nearing completion, some construction materials were being made available to the Kelowna Major Men’s Fastball Assn. (KMMFA). The league originally played their games in the City Park Oval, along with a women’s league that produced the 1957 Senior B Ladies Provincial Champions, the “Kelowna Aces”. Club 13 won its first provincial Sr. B championship in 1958, played in Vernon. The property that is currently King Stadium was formerly a rodeo grounds, and in 1958 the KMMFA went to the City and were given permission to use the property and the materials used in the original Okanagan Lake Bridge construction to build King’s Stadium. Names like Sehn, Schneider, Knorr, Welder, Luknowski, Marlatt and Howard, to name a few, were the original league members that constructed the stadium. William “Willie” King was an ambassador to the sport back in the day, and was the namesake for the park. The league began play in the 1960 season at King Stadium with the teams Club 13, The Rovers, The Bluecaps, The Mission Saints, and The Centenials. As the 60’s came to an end teams like the Willow Inn Willows and Royal Anne Royals had began and King Stadium played host to several hundred fans. Moving into the 70’s teams like Budget Boys, Sun Country Suns, Rovers, and Willows all used to play to packed stands as games were broadcast on local radio and interest was at an all time peak. The latter 70’s through early 80’s produced some new teams, Bob Harris Sports, HA Roberts Reds, Arena Motors T-birds, Lynx Brand, Price and Markle Club 13, and Sun Valley Canons. Enter the mid 80’s, where teams like the MW Sharpies, Andre’s Panasonics, Arena Motors T-birds, and Rutland Rovers offered a competitive brand of fastball drawing great crowds. King Stadium during this era went through many renovations, all done through the league; Presidents Bert Tonsi and Al Buchanan were instrumental in getting the park to today’s condition.
Andre’s Panasonics began competing in the Canada West Travel League then the Norwest Senior A Fastball league years ‘85-’94 bringing Senior A fastball to King’s .
1988 King’s stadium played host the Canadian Senior A Men’s Championships, attended by thousands, helped revive the game in the Okanagan.
“King and his Court”, Queen and her Court” National teams from New Zealand, Japan and the Dominican have all played exhibition games in King’s stadium.
In the last two decades King’s stadium has hosted the Canadian Senior A men’s selection camp, top caliber Senior A men’s tournaments, Senior B Men’s provincials, Masters provincials, and many other tournaments.
Long considered one of Canada’s most beautiful fastball parks. Kings will be undergoing an improvement with new bleachers and fencing, provided by the City of Kelowna. The park is managed by KMMFA vice president Lea Kunz, and over the last 10 years has played host to Kelowna Major Men’s, Kelowna Ladies league, and a slo-pitch league.
